KNOW YOUR POWER

A MESSAGE TO AMERICA'S DAUGHTERS

by Nancy Pelosi

“In this graceful personal and political history, Pelosi…details making history twice—becoming the first daughter to follow her father into Congress and in her groundbreaking election as the first female Speaker of the House in 2007. Pelosi writes passionately about the experiences of congressional women and takes on George W. Bush…a gentle account from a tough politician.”

- Publishers Weekly

Nancy Pelosi is the highest ranking elected woman in American history. Taking office as the first female Speaker of the House, second in line to the presidency, in January 2007, Pelosi received the gavel as she has led her life, surrounded by her children. Now, in KNOW YOUR POWER: A Message to America’s Daughters (Doubleday; July 29, 2008: U.S. $23.95), she shares her journey from homemaker to House Speaker, from the kitchen of her San Francisco home to the Congress of the United States.

Using her trademark integrity, strategic thinking, and determination, she shattered the “marble ceiling” of the U.S. Capitol and became an icon of female power. “When I became Speaker, it was American women who made history,” writes Nancy Pelosi. “My success is the result of the love and support of my family and most certainly an outgrowth of the wisdom and generosity of other women who enabled my path to power.”

In KNOW YOUR POWER, Pelosi draws on her personal and professional experiences, in appreciation of the powerful women who came before her, as well as those countless women (including her own daughters and granddaughter) whose lives have touched her own. As a child, when her father was a U.S. Congressman and mayor of Baltimore, she helped answer constituents’ calls and direct them to the answers they needed. When Sala Burton, a California Congresswoman who was as close as family, suggested and endorsed Pelosi’s run for her seat, her political career entered its national level.

Inspiring and insightful, in an interview, Pelosi can discuss:

· Declarations of Independence – From standing up for herself as the only girl born into a family of five sons to the stand she is taking today, Pelosi speaks truth to power

· Organize, Don’t Agonize – Running for Chair of the Democratic National Committee taught her to be battle-ready

· An Agent of Change – Immediately after being elected Speaker, Pelosi put together an agenda for the first 100 hours of the new session of Congress, not the first 100 days

· A Seat at the Table – The opportunity to bring women’s voices to the table in greater numbers must be exploited; it’s not, Should you serve, but, For how long?

· Build Bridges, Don’t Burn Them – The importance of coalition building, knowing when to strike out in a new direction, why you never draw a line in the sand, and more

As a woman who knows her power, Nancy Pelosi tells her story for her grandchildren and in recognition of the contributions of all women across America. We look forward to speaking with you about Nancy Pelosi and KNOW YOUR POWER.
